This powerful portrait of Jesus hangs in the Cave of the Milk chapel ("Lagrotte du Lait") in the Holy Land. A close-up of the face has circulated across the U.S. with claims that it moves or changes colors or causes healing. We don't know about that. We just know it's a beautiful picture with features congruent with the Shroud of Turin. Claims that it is imbued with the True Presence should not be accepted; only the Blessed Sacrament can claim that. The popularity of this picture spread when a Scranton, Pennsylvania, woman came back from a trip to Israel and found it among her photographs without remembering seeing it and had thousands of prints made. "The picture is now all over the world and the USA," said the woman, Jackie Haas. "I just wish that people would not be interested in where the picture came from, but look at the beauty and majesty of Christ. He is a portrait of love. It shows in this picture." While many thought at first that it materialized on the camera and was not an actual picture (at first no one was able to locate it in Israel), friends of ours from California found it at the Franciscan church and took a photo of the full portrait. Even if it didn't appear miraculously, it has had remarkable effects across America and may help us invoke Christ this Holy Week!
